3 delicious Christmas desserts to make at home

It’s that time of year again! ‘Tis the season to be jolly, and what better way to celebrate than with some delicious Christmas desserts?

Gingerbread cake 

This classic cake is perfect for the holidays. With its sweet yet spicy flavour, gingerbread cake is sure to please everyone at your holiday gathering. 

What you’ll need:

  • Flour
  • Baking powder
  • Ground ginger
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground cloves
  • Salt
  • Butter
  • Light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • Vanilla extract
  • Molasses

Method:

To make this delicious dessert, simply combine 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder, ¾ teaspoon ground ginger, ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground cloves, and ¼ teaspoon salt in a bowl. 

In a separate bowl, cream together ½ cup of softened butter and ⅔ of a cup of light brown sugar until it’s light and fluffy. 

Beat in 1 large egg until it’s combined and then add in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Add the dry ingredients alternately with ¾ of a cup molasses until it combines. 

Pour the batter into an 8x8 inch pan lined with parchment paper and bake at 180°C for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. 

Let it cool before serving, and then sit back and enjoy the happy faces around the dinner table, as everyone tucks into your delicious gingerbread cake!

Caramel Apple Pie 

What’s more festive than an apple pie? A caramel apple pie of course! This delicious dessert is sure to be a hit at your holiday gatherings. 

What you’ll need: 

  • 2 store-bought refrigerated 9-inch pie crusts
  • Flour
  • White sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • 5 Granny Smith apples
  • Butter
  • Thick cream 
  • Vanilla extract
  • Caramel

Method:

To make this yummy treat, preheat the oven to 200°C and roll out 2 store-bought, refrigerated 9-inch pie crusts onto two 9-inch pie pans; crimp edges as desired. 

Combine 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour, 6 tablespoons white sugar, 6 tablespoons brown sugar in a bowl; mix together with fingertips until blended. 

Peel 5 apples (Granny Smith recommended) and cut into slices; toss slices with mixture from the previous step until evenly coated, then fill each pie shell with apple slices (you should have enough for both pies). 

Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a small saucepan over medium heat; whisk in 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour until smooth, then slowly pour in ½ cup heavy cream while continuing to whisk; add 2 teaspoons vanilla extract then allow mixture to cook for about 5 minutes or until thickened slightly. 

Drizzle the caramel over each filled pie shell then bake the pies for 20 minutes before reducing temperature to 180°C; bake pies an additional 25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown then remove from the oven and let cool before serving!

Peppermint Bark

Looking for something sweet but simple? Look no further than peppermint bark! It only takes 15 minutes to make this easy treat which features layers of white chocolate topped with peppermint candy pieces—delicious! For any leftover ingredients, especially those delicious chocolate chips, you could use one of our honey jars to store them and keep them fresh. 

What you’ll need: 

  • White Chocolate chips
  • 4 candy canes

Method: 

Start by lining a baking dish (9x13 inch size recommended) with parchment paper; set aside for later use. 

Place 2 cups of white chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl (or double boiler if preferred) and heat on high power stirring every 30 seconds until completely melted; spread melted chocolate over parchment paper using a rubber spatula making sure to spread it evenly across the surface (about ½ inch thick). 

Sprinkle 4 crushed candy canes over the chocolate layer making sure it is distributed evenly across the surface; press down lightly into chocolate if necessary using the back of a spoon or rubber spatula then allow the bark to cool completely before breaking it into pieces (about 1 hour). 

Once cooled, completely break the bark using your hands or a knife into desired sizes/shapes; store bark either at room temperature or in a refrigerator depending on your preference! Enjoy your homemade peppermint bark!
