How to: Brew Beer at Home

Do you enjoy a Friday night down the pub with friends, but finding it’s getting a little pricey? Well, why not cut the costs and try brewing your own beer to enjoy? It’s quite simple!

Here’s how to brew your own beer:

You will need:

Airlock

Stopper

Brewing container with lid

Fermenting container with lid

Plastic hose

Funnel

Strainer

Capping machine

Bucket with a spigot

Plastic or glass bottles

Thermometer

Bottle brush

Bowl

Saucepan

Spatula (rubber preferably)

Oven mitts

Metal mixing spoon

Home brew kit

Method:

1. Your first step is to make sure you have all the equipment listed above. You can pick up all the ingredients needed in a home brew kit which is available in most large supermarkets.

2. Once you have all the equipment you need to give it all a good thorough clean.

3. Bring about 2 ½ litres of water to boil and then remove from the heat. Add the brew kit ingredients to the water and stir well.

4. Once the powder has fully dissolved put a lid on the pan and leave to sit for around 10 minutes on a low heat.

5. After the time has passed remove from the heat and add to 4 gallons of water in the fermenting container. Mix thoroughly and leave to ferment.

6. Now you have wort. Take your container and attach the funnel and strainer. Pour the mixture through the strainer and into the brewing container.

7. Once in, using your thermometer, measure the liquid’s temperature – it should be at room temperature. If it is not, allow to cool before going any further.

8. Add the yeast and stir in order to get some air into the mixture. Add the airlock and stopper and place the mixture in a cool dry place.

9. The fermentation process should take around 10 days but check on the mixture every few days just to be safe. You know the mixture is ready when bubbles no longer come out of the airlock and the liquid is now clear.

10. Next you must add the sugar. Siphon the beer into another container and add 2 cups of sugar to the beer, mixing as you go.

11. From here siphon the beer into the bottles so there is a small air gap at the top of each. Using your capping machine add lids to the bottles and leave for 2 to 3 months. Leave the bottles in the same cool dry place where you left the mixture to ferment a few weeks previously.

12. When the time has passed move it to the fridge and crack it open one weekend. Ahh, beer!

Sounds easy enough right? Enjoy a pint on us!
